- Were you able to find places and spaces where you could really listen? Yes, as we walked I realized how each place we stopped had its own unique sounds.
- Was it possible to move without making a sound? No, we walked in a large group, and some people were wearing high heels that day.
- What happened when you plugged your ears, and then unplugged them? With my ears plugged, i started feeling vibrations from things that would normally be heard as sounds. This was interesting in the parking garage with cars going by.
- What types of sounds were you able to hear? List them.
- Were you able to differentiate between sounds that had a recognizable source and those sounds you could not place? Inside buildings the sounds could be pinpointed easier because of the wind interference that day.
- Were you able to differentiate human, mechanical, and natural sounds?Yes. It was easy because natural sounds were minimal as it was winter.
- Were you able to detect subtleties, changes, or variations in the everpresent drone? Yes, especially when my ears were plugged.
- Extremely close sounds? Sounds coming from very far away? Yes, when inside the buildings it was sharper.
- Were you able to intervene in the urban landscape and create your own sounds by knocking on a resonant piece of metal, activating wind chimes, etc.? The rythmic footsteps of our group were constant throughout the walk. It had an interesting sound because of the variety of different shoes people were wearing.
- Do you feel you have a new understanding or appreciation of the sounds of our contemporary landscape/cityscape?Yes, when you really listen you can generate different meanings from different sounds.
- How do you think your soundwalk experience will affect your practice as a media artist, if at all? This exercise helped me realize that a person can derive meaning from anything, even something as simple as a walk through campus.
